Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy is a major center for training medical practitioners in one of the largest regions of the European part of Russia.

The medical faculty was opened in 1920 as a faculty of Nizhny Novgorod University. In May, 1930 it became an independent Medical Institute and in June 1994 it got a status of the State Medical Academy.

In 1992 the Faculty of Overseas Admissions was opened in NNSMA. Since 1998/99 academic year the Academy has started training international students in the English Medium.


More than 600 international students from 38 countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America (Sri-Lanka, Malaysia, Morocco, Tanzania, Kenya, Syria and others) are being trained in Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The total number of students is 2500.

The Academy is recognized by:

  • Public Service Department of Malaysia, Government of Malaysia -  September, 13, 2001;
  • Sri Lanka Medical Council – since  July, 24, 1998;
  • United Kingdom - since 1996 (limited registration).

 

The following faculties are available at the Academy:

FACULTY OF GENERAL  MEDICINE - is the biggest one. About half of all the students of the Academy specialize   in Surgery, Therapy, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Neurology etc. The training course lasts for 6 years.

PEDIATRIC FACULTY - physicians are taught here to treat children. The Regional Pediatric Hospital and the  Institute for Pediatric Research have been selected as teaching hospitals. Duration of the course  is  6 years.

FACULTY OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE: specialists are trained here to implement the main prophylactic principles  of public health to prevent diseases. Graduates from the Faculty are qualified as Hygienists and Epidemiologists. Duration of  the course  is 6 years.

FACULTY OF DENTISTRY: specialists in Dentistry are trained here.  After the basic course graduate students ought to have special primary internship training in the following branches: Dental Therapy, Dental Surgery, Dental Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry. Duration of training is 5 years.

PHARMACY  FACULTYprepares pharmacists. Duration of the course is 5 years.

Faculty of overseas admissions accomplishes admission of foreign applicants in the following specialities: General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy.

PRELIMINARY COURSE: International students are offered two-term  Preliminary Course of the Russian Language and basic subjects:  Chemistry, Physics and  Biology to enable the full participation in the training  process at the Academy. An Intensive Course of the Russian Language (duration 2 months) is  available to all applicants.

DEGREE TRAINING: The admission of foreign applicants is available for training in General Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy.

The academic year consists of two terms:

  • Autumn Term: September – January
  • Spring Term: February – June

POST-GRADUATE EDUCATION: As well as Russian graduates international students are welcome for postgraduate education. Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy  offers internship, residency and PhD programmes in the following fields of clinical practice: Internal Diseases, Pediatrics,  Radiodiagnostics and Radiotherapy, Surgery, Traumatology and Orthopedics, Cardiovascular Surgery, Infectious  Diseases, Nervous Diseases, Children Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Epidemiology, Hygiene, Microbiology,  Dentistry etc.

The academy is staffed with 722 well-qualified specialists among them - 76 professors and 145 associate professors. Faculty of Overseas Admissions is staffed with 166 specialists among them - 32 professors and 56 associate professors. Up-to-date medical equipment is available to the students for their training and research work.

Theoretical education is conducted in 8 special buildings, while clinical studies are carried out in well-equipped clinics and hospitals. Instructions are given through lectures and practical classes. Working group consists of 8-10 students. An important part of the training is the observation of patients, which aims at improving clinical thought of the students.


 

Students’ life

All students are provided with comfortable double rooms at 3 modern hostels situated in medical campus. Rooms are supplied with necessary furniture and bed linen.

Students have all conditions for enjoying sport and social activities: sport halls, swimming pools, Internet.

Students’ Admission to the Faculty of Overseas Admission

           Undergraduate applicants are required to have completed their general secondary education and legalized documents of secondary education. Persons applying have to go through multiple-choice entrance test which includes English, Biology and Chemistry and Physics. Students are admitted until all places have been filled.

Admission

            In order to apply for studying at the Academy an applicant should go through the following admission procedure:

  1. To send an application, copy of national passport with attached copies of the original educational documents by e-mail: dec-fois@gma.nnov.ru or marketing.nnsma@gmail.com
  2. If an applicant is accepted by NNSMA, the procedure of making invitation for obtaining student visa at the local Russian Embassy is launched (it usually takes a month)
  3. As soon as the invitation is ready, NNSMA will send it to an applicant or his/her representative.

                   On the day of arrival in Nizhny Novgorod the applicant should visit the Dean’s Office with the following documents:

  1. Original certificate of general secondary education certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education (if applicable) and certified by the Embassy of the Russian Federation
  2. Two copies of certificate of secondary education translated into Russian language certified  by the Embassy of the Russian Federation or by Russian notary (Note: all pages the document including stamps and seals must be translated).
  3. Original of national passport with a copy translated into Russian language and certified.
  4. Birth certificate.
  5. Valid medical certificate
  6. 10 photos. 3x 4

            Notice: All students must obtain a state-approved certificate of equivalence confirming the correspondence of a foreign document on education to those issued by Russian educational institutions.
